Cassidy woke alone. The sheets on AJ’s side of the bed were cool, and the clothes he’d laid over the back of the chair last night were MIA. Based on the light streaming in through the cracks in the blinds, the sun came up hours ago.

She hurriedly dressed, then brushed her hair and clipped it up. AJ and Tony’s voices told her they hadn’t left yet as she made her way toward the delicious aroma coming from the kitchen.

“Morning,” Tony greeted her, an empty plate in front of him. “Cassidy, this is Angela.”

“Welcome.” The striking brunette Cassidy remembered from the Lundgren’s got up from the small kitchen table.

“Thanks for letting us crash here last night.”

“No problem. I was asleep.” Angela laughed. “Coffee?”

“Please.”

“What else can I get you? Eggs, bacon, French toast?”

“Don’t we have to get out to meet up with the others?” Cassidy didn’t want them to be late because of her.

“We got time. Sit. Eat,” Tony ordered. “Might be a long day.”

She obediently sat under the weight of Tony’s words and stare.

“You don’t need to go to any trouble. A piece of fruit or yogurt is fine.” Cassidy caught AJ’s grin. Some habits, like being self-sufficient, were hard to break.

“It’s no trouble.” Angela handed Cassidy a coffee mug and waved a hand toward the counter. “I already prepped, and Tony told me about your situation—because of Felix Avila. You can have whatever you want for breakfast.”

“He told you?” She looked from Angela to Tony. Why would he involve her?

“It’s okay,” Tony reassured her. “Ang works with us in Joint Special Ops Command. She’s former FBI and won’t say a thing.”

“I also know who Avila is from my days with the CIA, and I can relate to a cartel wanting you dead. So, how do you like your eggs? Do you want sausage or bacon?” Angela smiled as if she were an innocent Army wife.

Last night when Tony said Angela could handle a gun, Cassidy thought he meant he’d taken her to a firing range. She tried to visualize Angela as a spy or undercover agent but didn’t dare ask the bad-ass woman fixing her breakfast how she’d come to work for both the CIA and FBI and made enemies of a dangerous cartel, too.
